What is the European Accessibility Act?
A European directive that has applied since June 28, 2025. It requires businesses to make certain products and services accessible to people with disabilities, including online.
Who does it apply to?
Among others: webshops and other consumer e-commerce, banking services, transport services, e-books and telecom. Microenterprises that provide services (fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in annual revenue or balance sheet total) are exempt.
What does your site need to do?
In practice: meet WCAG 2.1 level AA. Think sufficient contrast, alternative text for images, keyboard operation, clear forms and an accessibility statement.
What if you’re not compliant?
Each EU country enforces the rules itself and can impose penalties. More importantly: an accessible site works better for everyone, from older visitors to someone browsing on their phone in bright sunlight.
